Mass communication means communicating to the masses, relaying the information to the masses through different modes. The choice of the media selected for broadcasting the message is very important. The chosen media should have the ability to put the point in front of the large section of society instead of catering to just one individual, simply speaking it must have mass appeal the information to be relayed can take different forms. It can be purely newsy or entertaining. It can also take the form of infotainment.
There are number of mediums available today to transmit the information and each medium has its own merits. Print, Television and radio are some of the medium through which one can connect with the masses instantly. Internet is another medium which has gained huge popularity in recent years, though the new media is young medium, it is gradually overtaking other mediums.
Various branches of mass communication :
Advertising : The study of tools and techniques for brand-building through effective communication.
Club Disk Jockey: the art of selection and playing of music for intended audience usually in a club setting.
Journalism: The core purpose of journalism is to inform, educate and enlighten the masses on various issues revolving them.
Film Making: Study of skills used in acting, directing, producing, script writing, cinematography, sound recording, visual mixing and editing etc.
Publishing and Printing: Study of scientific methods used printing and publishing industry.
Public Relations: Important executive who looks after the public image of the organization.
Radio Jockeying: Profession involving conducting radio programmes on various topics for the masses.
Video Editing: Training in tools and technique in various process of re-arrangement and modification of the video forms.
Video Jockeying: The art of keeping the teeny boppers on their feet all night long.
Admission starts for first year in any discipline. This course is for three years duration and for each year, the examination will be conducted by the University. A candidate, passing +2 or Intermediate examination having a minimum of 45% marks in aggregate is eligible to apply admission, which subsequently will be decided through a written/Aptitude Test and Interview. The written will be of objective pattern covering radio, television, history, culture, literature, sports, current affairs and journalism etc.
Candidate should submit the admission form on or before the last data fixed, along with the Mark Sheet of Intermediate or +2 (or equivalent). The candidate, after filling up the form, will retain with her admit card and shall directly appear in the test on the date mentioned in the admit card.
RULES
The rule is general framed for students of Jamshedpur Women’s College will be applicable to the students of this discipline also. It should be noted that money deposited for admission will not be refunded in any case, even if a student’s does not continue this course for any reason.
Job Scope and Career Option: There are good job opportunities available under this career with newspapers, periodicals and magazines, central information service, press information bureau, websites, AIR and TV channels.
DETAILS OF THE SUBJECT COMBINATION
Journalism & Mass Communication has been approved by Kolhan University as Honours subject and is based on 15 papers besides permissible subsidiary subjects. For example, if a B.Sc. Student choose to have this subject as Honours, She will opt for 2 subsidiary subjects out of Physics/ Chemistry/ Maths/ Zoology/ Botany and a student of BA will choose any two out of Political Science/ Economics/ History/ English/ Hindi/ Sanskrit/ Geography/ Urdu/ Bangla/ Philosophy as subsidiary. In the same manner, a student of B.Com. Having this subject as Hons will go for two subjects of Commerce as subsidiary.
